If you read SEO 2.0 before you know that I do not like Digg, for several reasons. Also the two other well known social news communities Reddit and Netscape.com have disappointed me. In contrast I love StumbleUpon that works perfectly for users and webmasters alike. It’s not the democratic spirit I dislike about Digg, it’s the contrary of it. I dislike the elitism of the Digg voting system and the havoc Digg wreaks on blogs and their comments. Also the boredom of reading Apple, Linux, Xbox, WII and Playstation posts and US only news along with the lowest common denominator of all other topics tires me. Not to mention the SEO hate of course.

Digg, Reddit and Netscape.com have many equivalents internationally though where you can find fresh content and intriguing news.

To prove that I love democratic social news I collected the best 5 international Digg-like social news community sites from all over the world:

How did I rate them? I looked at the content, the atmosphere, the user base and the features. You might ask yourself “how can I use social news without speaking all those languages?” Well, OK, I speak Polish (I am born in Poland), I speak some Spanish (learned it in school for several years but forgot almost all of it) and I understand some French especially if I know the context.

There are always also English submissions on those news sites and sites you land on often have English sections. Pictures and brand names are the same everywhere so it does not matter in which language you find them. You do not believe me? Just check out some of the stuff I found:

As you see some countries and/or languages are missing. I especially am disappointed not to have found a really good Indian social news site. They were many but none was really impressing. The same applies to China. I wasn’t able to find a Russian Digg or Digg in Arabic as I can’t read neither language, so please help and add it in the comments if you know one.

PS.: Do not ask me why I did not add a German Digg equivalent to the list.

There is no German one on this list. You might want to check out YiGG and Webnews, the only two that count, but I can’t really recommend either one of them.

I wish sites like Digg were more acceptable of SEO content. BTW, thanks for sharing information about the international scene. Now I have a few links to check out. Thanks.

Please mind the commenting netiquette, most notably:

  • A "name" is a real name or nick name, not a keyword! SEO Company is wrong. John Doe of Google is OK.
  • For the "website" URL: No deep links allowed unless it's your "about" page.
  • No extra signature allowed, one "website" link is enough.
  • No bot-like "Thank you" comments with no context or added value to the post.
