Even before publishing my post hailing StumbleUpon as the best traffic source in the world, 2 of my posts got stumbled in the meantime. So I decided to look closer at StumbleUpon optimization methods. In fact there are lots of articles that show ways of increasing traffic from eBay owned StumbleUpon, a forerunner of a great shift from search and social news to social browsing.

Does it make sense to optimize for StumbleUpon in the first place? Yes it does, all famous web pros agree: StumbleUpon traffic is

So now that you probably got the message check out those 10 how to articles, the best come first this time:

  1. doshdosh: A Comprehensive Guide to StumbleUpon: How to Build Massive Traffic to Your Website
  2. Vincecordic.com: Increase Your Website Traffic and Make More Money With StumbleUpon
  3. doshdosh (again!): StumbleUpon Optimization: Leveraging Photo Stumbles for More Web Traffic
  4. Search Engine Land: 5 Tactics For Driving Traffic From StumbleUpon
  5. SEOptimise: How to increase StumbleUpon traffic?
  6. How to Stumble: How to Increase Stumbleupon Traffic for Your Website
  7. Search Marketing Standard: Building a Large Audience For Your StumbleUpon Account
  8. Daily Blogging Tips and Web 2.0 Development: Don’t Buy Traffic, Use StumbleUpon
  9. Words2Content: Lingering Taste Of StumbleUpon Traffic
  10. Ogletree SEO: Is Stumbleupon traffic worth getting?

Those 10 articles are more than you need to know about social media optimization for StumbleUpon. If you just have a minute, I summarize the main 5 points:

  1. Use the service yourself (the toolbar): Stumble, rate and review
  2. Get many friends on StumbleUpon
  3. Choose popular and interesting topics (not necessarily “make money online” or SEO)
  4. Use many and relevant tags
  5. Become a valuable part of the community

What I like most about all those attempts at increasing StumbleUpon traffic are the ethics of them: It’s pure white hat SEO 2.0, it’s not even link bait like in the case of social news sites. It’s just about using this social browsing service right. I love it, I hope webmasters and stumblers will love it alike.

Well, no problem. I can add it to the list :-)
Btw. do you have an alert on me or something? You comment always like 2 minutes after I publish something…

no, but I can stop commenting if you want? :S

I use Google Reader, ive found it to be pretty slow on updating. I never read when something was published just comment when I have time.

Oh no! Stay here. I only thought that you may use some unheard of superpowers to watch me. I am always eager to learn from the younger generations as nowadays they know more than the elderly in the thirties like me.

I agree stumble’s traffic is good quality and if you do it properly you can get thousands of hits per day - as I did :)

My last article did pretty well out of StumbleUpon, but that was planned for.

I’ve got few complaints about the volume of traffic my ‘blog gets, but it’s the conversion rate that attract me.

Of all the stuff I’ve read about the various social media platforms, StumbleUpon seems to come top in terms of conversion rates (subscriptions, comments, downloads et cetera) from visitors.

However, it’s not good to have all of your social media eggs in one digital basket — like StumbleUpon, for example…

In my case, I got 1.89 page views on average from 400 visitors from stumbleuppon. I always thought it was not fantastic, but I guess it is not so bad.
On the other hand, they did not click my ads :-(

Capitalizing on the quick SU crowd is long term and indirect. Don’t annoy them with ads.

I’m looking for a way to build links using stumbleupon, but no luck yet.

As you know, I just add you as fan in stumbleupon.

StumbleUpon is all about being social. It’s not about link building. It should be a side effect. That’s why I called this list “traffic optimization”. You get plenty of traffic but with the links it’s more difficult and depends on your content.

I’ve seen you. Thanky you, but I do not add more marketing friends as SU does not count votes by your friends like “true” votes.

When we first launched our site, we received a huge rush of StumbleUpon visitors. 15 months later it’s still our favorite traffic bump. Throw in the fact that it’s fun and it’s a winner.
