Search & Social Media Survival Guide

If the Internet would be disbanded and shut down completely tomorrow and you were only allowed to keep one functioning website, which one would you take?

Do not tell me your homepage, Google or Digg, I mean a website that works on its own without depending on other sites and that does not belong to you…

Please do not post just a URL, explain also why this particular website is the greatest!

I will collect and publish the best replies and everybody taking part will get due credits.

Probably most people will reply Wkipedia…

That’s a really interesting idea. You’re right, I’d pick Wikipedia, but next would probably be… Flickr :)

Just a question, kinda off topic: do you consider Wikipedia to be Web 2.0, Tad?

I want to be noble and say something sensible, but if it did really come down to it, i’d rely on my most base, animal instinct – the one thing that made the Internet so popular with everyone, and still continues to be one of its biggest uses – Sex.

So my vote would go for Gaydar.

So long as I get my fill… who cares about knowledge or leaving an Internet legacy?!

i think youporn.com is a good choice. this website works on its own, and i’am sure there a some people who choose the same, so the show goes on :)

…sorry i was just joking. i think i would choose webmasterradio.fm so i can listen to my favorite shows, but if the internet is shut down, they have to think about a new concept i guess…

Very interesting point guys. I did not say you will end up alone on an island btw. ;-)
Skellie: In Germany most people mention Wikipedia as one of the first examples of Web 2.0.
The usual Web 2.0 definition goes something like “The web to participate in, based on blogs, wikis and social networks. Wikipedia is the most known example of a wiki.”
    Does that answer your question?

I’d pick the Drudge Report-the latest important news.

onreact — Thanks. When people talk about Web 2.0 they often talk about social bookmarking and networking services so good old Wikipedia can get lost in the mix ;)

In the US yes, in Germany Web 2.0 is a little slow so Wikipedia is still the rage.

Thank you Mansour, but as long as he does not link it it’s OK. Others already mentioned porn sites above. I believe that everybody should decide her or himself whether she or he visites such sites.

Please mind the commenting netiquette, most notably:

  • A "name" is a real name or nick name, not a keyword! SEO Company is wrong. John Doe of Google is OK.
  • For the "website" URL: No deep links allowed unless it's your "about" page.
  • No extra signature allowed, one "website" link is enough.
  • No bot-like "Thank you" comments with no context or added value to the post.
