Yeah Matthew, that's true and it's also my point. Google is already pretty annoying today, tomorrow it can be our worst nightmare or already dead.
By now the power of Google is scary so I rather hope that people switch to other providers.

Nothing last forever, especially in the tech industry. There have been countless search engines and this is Googles Era but I am sure that the next big thing is on the horizon. Search results are pretty good in Google although there is a lot of room for improvement and let's face it Googles main money maker, Adwords, is the driving force behind creating a "good product". Unfortunately capitalism seems to always prevail over good! Just look at Youtube after it was acquired by Google, now I can't even watch a 3min video without a 2 minute commercial! And I thought TV was bad.

Marc: Good point and question. I'd trust the EFF for oversight.

Adrian: Yeah, maybe it was too cynical. Some people only want the "feel good" stuff ion their blogs.

I dont think your piece was too Google-bashing. I think that if you are pragmatically cynical and follow the money you can always guess the intentions of large companies including Googles. Generally if you look a few years back, you generally see the clues to what is live today. There are always exceptions.
Keep up the critique fella.

It seems like someone is going to make the all-knowing digital assistant eventually and Google seems slightly more trustworthy than other corporations but we still have to be diligent about keeping our personal data as anonymous and safe as possible. Is there a non-profit org or govt agency that can actually understand this and create safegaurds?
