SEO 2.0 is about link love. So I installed the fabulous DoFollow plugin for Wordpress. To prevent link rape by spammers links get their nofollow attribute removed after 24 hours.

So marketers, webmasters and bloggers: Spread the love, say something nice, funny or useful. You can even flame, but then I will flame twice as hard, been flamin’ around the net fo’ a decade punk!

Feel free to spread the link love anyway you like, as a comment, ping or trackback. No safer sex anymore for those with true deep emotions about SEO 2.0!

The nicest people will end up on my blogroll.

[Edit:] Please mind the blog commenting netiquette though.

This is a nice way to increase the number of comments. I’ve been using a dofollow plugin for quite some time now. :)

  2. Posted July 26, 2007 at 11:58 am | Permalink

True. Nofollow failed big time. I even see sites using nofollow on all links! So those who use dofollow stand out in a positive way.

    Hey Tadeusz,

nice to see that you startetd a SEO 2.0 Blog. Doing it in English is a very good choice!

As you know I`m marketer, webmaster and blogger plus I have something nice, funny and useful to say: ;-)

Whenever you are tired of deleting links because they might be a little bit too spammy remember that there are alternative DoFollow Plugins for everyone enabling you to give link love only to websites you defenetly like. Andy Beard is fighting for all of these cool plugins and keeps you updated whenever you like. ;-)

  4. Posted August 2, 2007 at 7:46 pm | Permalink

Thank you Oliver for the link. Until now the original dofollow works fine and people commenting are perfectly polite. However in case it gets worse I will check the other ones.

  5. Posted August 5, 2007 at 1:00 am | Permalink

Oh yeah? Well, I started flame-war on usenet back in 1989.

    :-)

  6. Posted August 5, 2007 at 1:04 am | Permalink

So you are an adult flamer by now: 18 years of flaming.

  7. Posted August 6, 2007 at 7:31 am | Permalink

This is the first reference I have heard to SEO 2.0. I would argue that SEO for Web 2.0 web design would contain the attributes necessary to index dynamic ajax pages and so forth. I do agree that linking is love :)

  8. Posted August 9, 2007 at 10:15 pm | Permalink

Would have been great if your page had some nice PR as well ;-)

    Anyway, thanks! :-)

This is good stuff, last week I added Do-Follow to my own site. Good to see it is spreading everywhere

  10. Posted August 16, 2007 at 9:12 am | Permalink

thanks - was looking for a plugin that did this.

The “DOfollow” movement seems to be increasing in popularity, I can see it doing some great things, increasing what we actually read online, and getting bloggers to get out and mingle a bit, as well as lend content to each others blogs that is worth reading .. the expiration mod will help with that worth reading part quite a bit :)

  12. Posted September 12, 2007 at 7:18 pm | Permalink

Hi, I wrote an article about DoFollow in farsi:

  13. Posted September 16, 2007 at 3:03 pm | Permalink

Increased traffic and comments for a little google juice is a good trade for most blogs. Between akismet and moderation bloggers really don’t need to worry about the spammers.

  14. Posted September 16, 2007 at 7:24 pm | Permalink

Yes, akismet does a great job, and I had in fact no problems with manual SEO spammers ;-)

  15. Posted September 29, 2007 at 12:00 am | Permalink

Its ironic that many bloggers talk about this but then they actually use no follow.

  16. Posted October 3, 2007 at 3:19 am | Permalink

I dont see the point in using no follow, as those who use it dont loose any of their PR. Go no follow!

  17. Posted October 8, 2007 at 3:07 pm | Permalink

Not sure if thats true, isnt there something called PR Bleeding ?

I m not too familiar with it my self, so cant say for sure.

  18. Posted October 11, 2007 at 12:02 am | Permalink

rel=nofollow only works with Google anyway and does not do anything to MSN and Yahoo — so, I’ve noticed.

  19. Posted October 23, 2007 at 11:28 am | Permalink

I didnt notice that. I will give it a try

  20. Posted November 3, 2007 at 4:17 pm | Permalink

Its not just about link rape, but forcing google to get better and better.

The control of the Link should not be given to the one who is linked to, no?

  21. Posted November 5, 2007 at 8:33 am | Permalink

The question is: does dofollow lead to increased irrelevant comments? ;)

  22. Posted November 9, 2007 at 12:05 pm | Permalink

i think yahoo does not support this

  23. merryrosa
    Posted November 9, 2007 at 5:06 pm | Permalink

and msn does not support it too.

  24. Posted November 19, 2007 at 7:55 pm | Permalink

dofollow will lead to increased irrelevant comments but that’s what you have moderation for I guess

  25. Posted November 21, 2007 at 12:41 pm | Permalink

Its a nice concept, but it also leads to increased ’spam’ with comments like ‘Good Job’ or ‘Nice blog’ that are not actually relevant to the post, but are just there because the poster saw a ‘DoFollow’ badge on the blog and wanted a backlink.

I suppose you could call this a double edged sword, it’d definitely get your more comments, but also increase your moderation work.

  26. Posted November 24, 2007 at 9:24 pm | Permalink

Moderation is not the perfect answer, but for small to middle-size blogs it is far better than nofollows.

  27. Posted November 25, 2007 at 9:14 pm | Permalink

I think that DoFollow is a good thing for bloggers. Bloggers that pay attention to SEO technics will be more likely to put quality content on comments of others blogs because they know that theirs comments will be followed.

  28. Posted November 27, 2007 at 10:03 pm | Permalink

Like above, I noticed after installing dofollow, we seem to get a lot of commenters that have anchor links in their nickname :D

  29. Posted December 31, 2007 at 2:19 am | Permalink

Wish I had something funny to say or a blog where I could make dofollow on but I don’t. But thanks for the link anyway.

Would be nice if we all could use some link love methods for great sites..

  36. Posted March 2, 2008 at 10:22 am | Permalink

Do follow is great but be prepared to spend more time deleting spammy comments. I’ve used it on several blog and the results have more advantages than drawback IF you catch and delete all the resulting junk.

  37. Posted March 5, 2008 at 3:21 pm | Permalink

Thanks for this. I really think is a great idea to increase the number of comments and so communicating.

  38. Posted March 8, 2008 at 6:29 pm | Permalink

I’m pretty sure that dofollow does not increase the number of spammers in any way: spammers are just blindly increasing the number of spammy messages without caring of the follow thing.
And I removed nofollow from all of my wp blogs.

  39. Posted March 9, 2008 at 1:58 am | Permalink

I think Do-Follow Blogs will stand out a lot more and many more people will respond to posts which also helps the Blog. So in a way it is good for both the commenter and Blog owner.

I wonder if the murky underworld is busy beavering at creating a Spam2.0 for Web2.0 Seo2.0

The nut to crack would be spidering sites for “nofollow” lapse pages and spamming them instead of quality builds.

  41. Posted March 25, 2008 at 10:11 am | Permalink

Installing this plug-in may be one of the best actions a blogger can take! it improves your comment number and this is one of the most important factors when it comes to blogging. What shows the fact that a blog is visited and active? The comment number!

  42. Posted March 25, 2008 at 10:12 am | Permalink

I guess you also receive a lot of spam comments. I know I do on my website. I guess you have a spam filter like Akismet, right? Sometimes I ask myself if it is enough these days.

  43. Posted March 26, 2008 at 9:22 am | Permalink

I have seen this everywhere and I hope it’s not taking away rather than adding to. I’m going to give it a try on my blog and see what happens. Thanks for the post.

Without a shadow of a doubt, nofollow hoards the love rather than spreading it..the dofollow attribute has been a great piece of idea to increase both BL & traffic..

Good to see that “Do-follow” are gaining. I posted a blogg entry 6 months ago about manual editing the comment.php to remove no-follow from comments. I wasnt aware the of plugins doing the job :) The spambam plugin are keeping my blogg spam free, so only have to check on the few legit commenters to avoid spam.
    Keep up the good work!

So, does this plugin allow you to set the “nofollow” to be removed after 24 hours? Or did I read your post wrong? Do you suggest a separate spam plugin aside from akismet?

    Thanks for the tip!

I’ve also implemented DoFollow (as a plugin for WordPress), and I’ve been pleased with the results. Fortunately, my blog is pretty small so I haven’t really gotten many spammy comments — but I guess if I had a better-ranked blog that wouldn’t be such a problem (no spam that is). :)

  70. Posted July 5, 2008 at 7:04 pm | Permalink

The “nofollow” has been pretty much a hands-down failure. I’ve been using DoFollow for over a year now, and I’ve gotten very few comments that were simply there for link juice. I moderate my comments pretty closely however, so as long as someone says something relevant, the comment stays.
