writing vs blogging. much to do about nothing. do what you do and that's all you can do baby. don't worry about the labelers or the nunchuckers (you know who you are). If, at the end of the day, you've said your peace (piece?), then you're ahead of the next guy. Which, after all, is all you're really trying to do anyway, you self-grandizing, narcissists (ie- blogger). Look, don't blame me for telling the truth. I'm a blogger too.

This article is fascinating, for me blogging is a new outlet for writing. But most blogging is comment based. Maybe it depends if you are a blogger or author of an article posting a blog, which defines blogging V's writing.

Fraser: Of course people blog for a multitude of reasons. Formally though part of the blog posts written are only relevant for a given timeframe while other blog posts like you yourself admit are timeless and work in a book as well.

So shouldn't we aim to write timeless postings instead of "news" that become irrelevant quickly?

Whether the blog authors consider themselves writers is secondary. I didn't say that they actually know the difference or do it on purpose.

In contrast I'd like to write consciously instead of just blogging posts that will become worthless tomorrow.

Ted: Yes, that's what I attempted to define. While people's opinions differ we know that there is a line between journalism and literary writing for example.

Blogging is very similar to journalism formally. It's no coincidence that some people call it citizen journalism.

So I guess the difference is to be found along similar lines. Blogging is descriptive, time sensitive and attempts to be factual. Writing is creative, timeless and at least partly fictional.

For instance I created part of the SEO 2.0 meaning. The term existed but I gave it a slightly different meaning. I think that part of my blogging past was creative writing while my posts about how to use StumbleUpon etc. were not. The optimization techniques described might have been creative but formally it was just descriptive blogging.

blogging is just a new tool for writing, ehh? Interesting angle.

I guess the most obvious question is: where does blogging end and writing begin? Where is that line?

I'm guessing it's different for everyone.

Thought provoking as always, but I don’t think blogging can be pigeonhole so easily. Is it not more complex, people blog for a variety of reasons, about an infinite number of things and I would guess most of them would call what they do blogging. I have read a couple off blogs that were turned into books and found them just as enlightening and engaging as some autobiographies. Having seen interviews with the authors they did not consider themselves as writers, to them they were just telling it as it was. I think blogging can be writing, maybe not literature but certainly writing.
